Sudmalis on the hunt for fresh fast rail proposals

Fresh ideas to build faster rail services to help with housing and job opportunities in regional areas are being sought by the Coalition Government.

Today the Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis called for business cases for new or upgraded rail infrastructure that would better connect Kiama, the Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla.

“Gilmore is growing and we need to work together in building connectivity,” she said.

“We have some really smart and innovative people in Gilmore who have the ability to develop plans that would support a case to get rail services to our region.

“Plans should incorporate quick travel times, increase economic productivity, reduce freight costs, improve commuter’s experience, encourage job and career opportunities, and improve access to specialist services.

“Perhaps plans could include utilising the Old Nowra Bridge as a rail crossing.

“We have $20 million on the table to support the development of business cases, following a commitment to investigate faster rail options in the 2017–18 Budget,” said Mrs Sudmalis.

Proposals are open for application to both state governments and the private sector, including consortia arrangements, with submissions for high-level Stage 1 proposals closing on 13 October 2017.

The Faster Rail Prospectus is part of the Coalition Government’s record $20 billion national rail investment announced in the 2017/18 Budget.
